Why validate before manufacturing
The most expensive private label mistake happens before the first listing goes live: ordering a thousand units of a product three brands already dominate, or one that only turns a profit if the supplier charges half of what they do. Three questions settle most of this:
- Who already sells something similar, and how much? If the leaders sell little, there's no market. If they sell a lot with thousands of reviews, getting in is expensive.
- Is the market in the hands of a few brands? A fragmented market welcomes a newcomer. A concentrated one demands a clear differentiator.
- Is there money left after fees? Referral fee, fulfillment and product cost, at the price the niche accepts.
Product Validation answers all three on one screen, starting from a concept that doesn't even exist yet.
Step by step
- Open Competitive › Product Research and choose the marketplace (US).
- At the top, click Product Validation. The My product concept block appears.
- Fill in the Product title (at least 3 words), as it would appear on Amazon, and the Target selling price.
- Optionally, fill in the Main search term (what the shopper would type; if blank, we use the first words of the title), the Category, the Cost per unit, the Description and the Bullet points. Without the cost, it's estimated and the verdict flags it.
- Click Run analysis. It takes up to a minute.
How to read the result
The result opens with four blocks:
- Verdict: Viable, Caution or Not viable, with the hypothesis, the watch-outs and what would make you drop the idea. Right below, the Concept summary shows three indicators: competitive position, feature readiness and customer fit, plus where your target price falls in the market range.
- Market: monthly sales and revenue of the leaders, brand concentration, median price, share of the top 3 brands, how much is unbranded product, and whether Amazon sells in the niche.
- The numbers: the best fulfillment option, margin, ROI and the maximum landed cost, the ceiling you can pay the supplier and still keep a 15% margin.
- Best-selling similar competitors: up to 10, with price, sales per month, ratings, sellers, Amazon's presence and Opportunity Score.
Notice that a good margin isn't enough. In the demo example, the product earns a healthy profit per unit, but the top 3 brands hold 87.9% of sales. The verdict calls for caution and says exactly what would make you walk away, for example the cost per unit rising above the maximum landed cost.
To test another price or cost, click Duplicate concept, adjust and run it again. Analyses are saved under Past simulations, and reopening one doesn't use the quota.
Comparison with the leaders
After the numbers, Product Validation reads what shoppers say about the 3 best-selling similar products and compares it with your concept:
- What the leaders' customers like and dislike: complaints, praise and improvement requests, with how many mentions and across how many leaders. For each theme, the app says whether your concept addresses it, partially addresses it, or doesn't. A complaint your concept solves is a selling point.
- Features: your concept vs. the leaders: each feature side by side, with what you have extra, what's missing and what's the same. The more bullet points you fill in, the better the comparison.
- Recommendations for the product and the listing: up to three adjustments, each with its expected impact (conversion, ratings or sales).
- Seasonality: the leaders' month-by-month demand over the last 12 months, with peak and trough. It helps you decide when inventory needs to arrive.
Amazon's validator and Opportunity Explorer data
In US Seller Central, Amazon's Product Opportunity Explorer includes "Validate product ideas." Product Validation uses the same fields as Amazon's validator, so you can test the same text in both places and compare.
Amazon's fees come from your store's integration, so the numbers are most accurate when you validate in the marketplace of your connected account. On amazon.com, the result also shows the category's return reasons, according to Amazon. To get the return rate and niche numbers exactly as Amazon shows them, import the Product Opportunity Explorer CSV (Seller Central, Download button) in the optional block below the competitors: the imported niche appears side by side with the analysis and can pre-fill the concept. Importing doesn't use simulations. To find the demand signal first, see Amazon's Product Opportunity Explorer: how to validate a product before manufacturing.
How many simulations per month
Each analysis uses one simulation from the company's monthly quota, which resets on the 1st:
| Plan | Simulations per month |
|---|---|
| Starter | 3 |
| Professional | 10 |
| Advanced | 25 |
| Business | 50 |
| Agency and Ambassador | 50 |
Your balance appears next to Run analysis. If you run out, contact EcomVision Support to unlock more simulations. In the demo account, the app shows a sample simulation.
Asking Vision
You can also ask Vision, EcomVision's AI, to run the validation: "validate this idea: stainless steel rotating spice rack at $34.99, cost $9". It confirms before running, because the analysis uses a simulation from the quota, and returns the verdict with a link to open the full result on screen.
Validate the idea. Then the sample. Only then the order.
